In 1975, my Uncle David, made a second attempt at marriage, exchanging vows with his childhood sweetheart, a beard named “Cookie”. This brief matrimony ( they were wed for two weeks) was an aborted attempt, by David, to assimilate into heteronormativity—to be the type of son who would make his father proud.

This 30cm x 30cm (appx 12in x 12in) portrait is printed on birch wood with visible grain and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity. The photograph is taken from a chapter in my upcoming photobook Unreliable Narrators about the life of my iconic Uncle Dave. — Malika Ali Harding
